When you are about to try something for the first time, it’s generally a good idea to consult an expert. For the same reasons it would be unwise to skydive without taking lessons and talking to an instructor, it would be unwise to take the risks of starting a business without talking to somebody with experience.
When I was starting my business, I was lucky enough to have access to a man who worked as the CFO at some of the world’s largest companies. A meeting with him helped me rethink how I planned to fund my business. Aside from the excellent advice about how to procure investment, he helped me fix flaws in my business plan that I would never have seen until it was too late.
CFO’s are generally very busy men and I was lucky to get that meeting. However, nothing is stopping you from finding the best person you can to consult with. Look for somebody with investment experience. Look for somebody who already started a successful business. If you are having a hard time finding an expert to talk to, don’t be afraid to take your unpolished business idea to a professional investor. You are going to need funding anyway and investors are looking to get a return. If they see something they like, they are going to help you make it work. If they don’t like your idea, you can always ask them what you would have to change before they would be willing to fund it. It’s a great way to get feedback.
Also, if one person doesn’t like what you have to say, don’t give up. Different people have different perspectives and opinions. Even the “experts” can be wrong. Many successful business ideas were turned down by investors until one courageous person was willing to take a risk.
Lets take a quick look at how I deal with criticism.
