Setting Goals

The whole point of this guide is to help you find ways to be happier. Before you can set goals for your business, you have to know what you need to be happy. Once you know what it is going to take in order for you to be happy, we can work backwards. This is how we are going to set our goals.

Let me give you an example.

I would be very happy if I could afford to buy condos all over the world, just so I could give copies of the keys to all of my friends and family. Extensive travel has been one of the most fulfilling things in my life, and I want to share that with the people I care about.

I will only be satisfied if I earn the money to buy these condos by doing work I enjoy. Inheriting it, winning the lottery, or doing something that I am morally opposed to would make me feel guilty.

The condos don’t have to be palaces, but they have to be in safe areas, and they have to be comfortable. Let’s arbitrarily say I want to start by purchasing 10 condos. Each one will cost $2 million for a total of $20 million.

So what did I just learn? My goal is to make as much hard earned honest money as I can as long as I am happy doing it. This makes me an open-minded person when it comes to business. I will always be looking for the best monetary opportunities. I might be working on more than one thing at a time. For me, the perfect business is a holding company that owns and runs many smaller businesses. That way I can work towards a monetary goal, and I am never bored. Money shouldn’t always be the goal though.

Say you want to spend all of your time on the beach in the Caribbean. For you, a great business could be a hot-dog stand on the beach. I might make more money, but you would be miserable doing what I do.

The point is that everybody wants different things. So ask yourself some questions and think about what you really want.

  1. What exactly do you want to accomplish?
  2. Do you want to help other people?
  3. Do you want to start a non-profit?
  4. Are you doing this because you hate your job?
  5. Do you want to make more money?
  6. Do you want more freedom and independence?

You should now have a good idea of what you really want. Think about what kind of business will help you live that lifestyle. Open a bar on the beach, charge people and give them skydiving lessons or if you want to spend all of your time on your computer, earn money by creating a monetized website with ads on it.

Remember though to be careful. It’s easy to set your sights too high. Business is risky and success isn’t always easy.

Lets start talking about finding somebody to brainstorm with.
