A Letter to my Government

September 8th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Dear Government,

Let me start by saying how much I love the United States of America.  I love what my country stands for, I love my freedoms, I love diversity, I love political debate, and I love sharing opinions with others even though we don’t always agree.  What I love most though is the American Dream.  It’s true that I was born into a middle class family with parents who taught me the value of hard work, and I was lucky enough to attend college, but the vast number of hardworking and successful men and women from far less privileged backrounds that I have met along the way are proof that the American Dream is alive and well.

Yet despite my undying love for my great country, I can’t help feeling slightly less enthusiastic about you.  I believe that as the government, it’s your job to protect the citizens of the United States, and frankly, you guys suck at it.

The specific situation I am talking about is the “housing crisis” and your takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  I want to let you in on a little secret.  Management at these companies knew this would happen.  They knew that if their companies were about to go under, you would bail them out.  They knew that because you would act as a safety net, they were free to hand out bad loans like a pedophile hands out candy.  Your inevitable intervention made sure that managers held no accountability or personal responsibility for their actions.  Your intervention with Fannie and Freddie is only going to encourage other large companies to act irresponsibly because now they know that no matter how corrupt they are, you will bail them out.

The problem is you are bailing them out with my money, and I am a firm believer that even if you manage to save Fannie and Freddie, you will still find some way to screw up and hurt the tax payer in the end.  So please, I beg of you, don’t do anything.  Just stop.  The more you try and help, the more you screw things up.

I believe it was Thomas Jefferson (or was it Paine?) who said, “That government is best which governs least.”

So please guys, just stop trying.

Thanks.
