Earth to employers- Interns don’t want to spend their time making you coffee and sweeping the floor.
If you haven’t been paying attention, graduating college students face huge competition for jobs. The economy is struggling, the value of the dollar has plummeted, and the cost of living continues to rise.
For the opportunistic business, this is a goldmine. There is a highly educated group of young men and women who are willing to work for literally nothing. What better way to cut costs and stay competitive than hiring interns?
I am aware of how valuable an experienced employee is and I don’t advocate firing employees and replacing them with college students, but here are some reasons why I think businesses should turn to interns first.
- Interns are young, energetic, tech savvy, and full of new ideas.
- Interns can bring a unique perspective because they are members of an emerging new demographic of recently graduated consumers with unique tastes.
- Interns are eager to work and learn. You may be getting free labor but they are getting something great to put on their resumes.
- Interns are willing to work for free. You can also hire interns and pay them on commission. You only pay them if they can help you create value.
- Interns expect to do menial work. If you do have menial work that needs to get done, Interns can do it.
- Interns have friends. An Intern’s extensive social network on college campuses can grant you direct access to a large pool of students in different academic diciplines.
- Interns are like try before you buy employees. Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. If the Intern helps you create value, you can hire them as an employee.
- Interns are highly motivated. Interns are eager to impress you because they want a job offer.
Although the time and energy that goes into training an Intern is great, the potential reward for you and your business is even greater. Check out the career center at your local college campus today.
